With reference to the National Movement from 1930 to 1947, answer the following: What was the significance of the Second Round Table Conference held in 1931

  1. Gandhi was chosen as the sole representative of the Congress for the Second Round Table Conference.
  2. The Second Round Conference devoted most of its time to the communal question and the representation of minorities-the Muslims, Sikhs, the Christians and Anglo-Indians-in legislatures both at the Centre and in the Provinces.
  3. Gandhi was disgusted to find that most leaders were concerned only about seats in the legislatures for their respective communities.
  4. The question of Independence or of setting up a Responsible Government receded into background.
  5. Gandhi returned empty handed as he could not persuade the British government to grant Freedom or even the Dominion Status to India.
